How we find your sun sign
Your sun sign is the slice of the zodiac the Sun was passing through on the day you were born. Astrologers divide the Sun's yearly path across the sky, the ecliptic, into twelve equal 30° segments, starting with Aries at the March equinox. Rather than reading from a fixed date chart, this calculator works out the Sun's actual position for your birthday with a standard astronomical formula, so it stays accurate for every year from 1900 to today.
Why some birthdays show two signs
The dates printed in horoscopes are averages. The moment the Sun crosses from one sign into the next drifts by up to a day from year to year, because our calendar and Earth's orbit never line up perfectly. If your birthday falls within a day of a changeover, we show both signs. Your birth time settles it, which is exactly what a free birth chart does.
Signs and the constellations
Each sign is named after a constellation. Every sign page here pairs the real star pattern, drawn from Hipparcos satellite positions, with a hand-coloured plate from Urania's Mirror, a set of star cards published in London in 1824. Because Earth's axis slowly wobbles (precession), signs and constellations have drifted apart over the centuries: on your birthday the Sun often stands in front of the constellation one sign earlier. Western astrology keeps the season-based signs, and that is the system used here.
